Pickup Truck Accessories - Bed Liners a Must?

Pickup Truck Accessories - Bed Liners a Must?

One of the most popular pickup truck accessories is the bed liner. Bed liners range from expensive spray on liners to the lowly rubber bed mat. Here are the main options and the advantages of each.

Spray On Liners

Considered the premium option, spray liners from companies like Line-X and Rhino Linings are the best for a custom look and guaranteed performance. That guarantee is one big selling point. These liners custom fit any truck because they are indeed a paint on liner.

Now it's a really tough two part paint that includes rubber-like texture. One main trick to the liners is just the thickness of the coating. It's so thick that it's almost impossible to scratch through the coating to reach the truck bed itself.

This is a premium choice, but it's expensive and it's still paint. It's subject to damage, but it's easily repaired.

Drop In Plastic Liners

Thick plastic liners offer even better protection than spray liners in some ways. Plastic resists impacts and prevents dents better than just about anything else. Plus, unlike spray liners, these are removable if you change your mind. Scratches can hardly reach through a plastic liner, since the material is so tough. Dent prevention may be the number one best feature.

Look out for water under a plastic liner. Hidden water under a liner can be the start of rust and corrosion. A multi-piece liner like the DualLiner beats that problem with better drainage built in.

Carpet Bed Rugs

Luxury carpet liners work especially well under tonneau covers or bed toppers. Not that carpet mats can't take the weather. It's just that they work better under cover. Carpet provides a non-skid surface that's soft on cargo while protecting both bed and load.

Rubber Bed Mats

No liner is tougher than thick rubber mats. Want to protect from impacts and dents? This is the top choice and the cheapest choice too. Even with a spray on liner, rubber mats offer dent and scratch protection for almost nothing. For frugal folks, these mats look great too, when you consider how little you spent.

Protect cargo and bed paint with one of the most popular pickup truck accessories, bed liners for trucks. For my money, seems like every truck needs at least one of the cheaper bed mats for at least basic protection.

How to Choose a Truck Grille Guard

How to Choose a Truck Grille Guard

On the road, whether on a highway or out in the bush, you never know when you might have to stop suddenly. Furthermore, you never know when you might accidently hit something. What's stopping the impact from shattering your wind screen, smashing your truck and harming your passenger?

The answer? A grille guard.

A grille guard is a front protector for your truck. Grille guards protect your window, the radiator and most importantly, the passengers. Having a grille guard can not only save a life, but it can also save you thousands of dollars in repair costs.

Made out of tubular steel, grille guards have been designed to handle all types of weather and driving conditions. They are resistant and durable and offer the best front end protection for you truck. They come in a variety of styles and sizes depending on what you are looking for.

So how can you choose a guard that is suited for your truck, for your needs, and for your budget? Simple, read on.

  1. First of all, when choosing a grille guard, you need to ensure that the guard is the right size and model for your truck. Most guards can fit Ford, GMC, Chevy, Dodge and Toyota but you need to speak to a manufacturer or retailer in order to determine which the best suited guard for your truck model and year is. If you don't, then you might have to drill new holes into the truck's underside. This is inconvenient and also can damage the look of your beloved truck.

  2. Also, when choosing a grille guard, you should think about purchasing an entire grille guard package. This includes a skid plate and other components. This can complete the front end of your truck and give you the look and protection you want and need.

  3. Determine the thickness of the guard as well. The thicker the better as it will offer more protection. However, this all comes down to the look you want and what you plan on using the truck for?

Are you planning on 4 WD adventures every weekend into the rugged terrain where you will need to chop down bushes in the process? Or are you mostly on the highway, traveling to and from work sites? A thicker guard is best for protection, but they are also costly and heavier which means the fuel can go up in price as well.

  4. Now it's time to choose your finish. Do you want chrome, stainless steel, and powder coated black? Your choice of finishing is what brings your grille guards all together.

  5. Finally, decide on your style. Every company and manufacturer is different when it comes to grille guards. However, some of the best produced grille guards in the United States are the Rancher Grille Guard, the Big Tex Grille Guard and the Winch System grille guard. They look sleek and stylish. Of course, to determine what style is right for your truck, you need to weigh all your options.

Pickup Truck Accessories - Bed Mats

Pickup Truck Accessories - Bed Mats

Pickup truck accessories range from the useful to those just for fun. Bed protection can look good but it's mostly practical. That's especially true for the lowly rubber bed mat. Here's what I found when I bought one.

I just wanted a simple bed mat to protect the bed of my 1976 Chevy C-10 with just 48,000 original miles and all original paint. The need was for a custom bed mat and I needed it within a few days, for a one-time hauling job.

Now rubber bed mats may be one of the very best deals in any kind of pickup accessory. That's because they protect as well as, or better, than even the most expensive bed liner, but they cost nearly nothing. In my opinion, they look good doing it too.

First, I considered my favorite on-line sources. Some of the models available were not offered for my old truck. That seemed a little strange since that same bed configuration was offered for many years. But that was the case. The ones that were available would take longer than I wanted to wait.

So I broke out the phone book and started calling. The response when I mentioned the model year of the pickup was usually an amused chuckle. Then an explanation followed about how that was a special order and would take some time. No luck anywhere on the phone...

As a last resort, why not check the auto parts stores in the neighborhood?

The first stop yielded a helpful counter man and even a search through the paper catalog, but again it's going to take a week or more. So it's on to the other parts store, which happens to be right next door. No way would that work, I thought, but it's my last shot.

Same question was posed and the counter guy says he can make a call and maybe find one. So he does and the answer is that there is one and it would cost fifty bucks. "Is that OK?"

Huh? Fifty bucks, I thought. Well... Sure... It sort of sounded like a joke. "Check back tomorrow about noon," said the counter guy.

I did and there it was. A big, heavy, black rubber bed mat perfectly sized to fit my old truck and it only cost an even fifty bucks plus the tax. Such a deal...

Getting the right pickup truck accessories at the right price sometimes means being in the right place and asking the right person. Finding the right place may take some time and trial and error.

Pickup Truck Accessories - A Statement

Pickup Truck Accessories - A Statement

Pickup truck accessories vary from purely functional to art in motion. Then there are all the options that are actually a combination of function and looks. Why don't truck manufacturers provide all the parts anybody could ever need?

Well, the target of what truck owners want is a moving target. That's partly because uses for trucks continue to evolve. Then the style that's popular evolves as well. Then parts suppliers continue to invent and innovate and there's a ready market for all kinds of different ways to make your truck a little different.

It may be higher, lower, bigger, smaller, who knows what appeals to whom?

Practical examples include pickup bed covers. That's a natural addition to protect cargo and protect truck paint as well. But how far to go with spending for a bed cover? A cheap soft cover does most of what a cover can do. But if you want more security, why not a retractable metal cover? But is there really a need for a remote control electric retractable cover? Must be, since they sell regularly.

Then there are the truck lowering kits, the ones that are invisible from the bed. How practical is it to have a vehicle that sits three inches off the ground? Not too... But then who says it's practical? It is about look and attention and just seeing what can be done... Let's face it, much of what happens to pickup trucks goes far beyond practical.

What happens to pickups is largely an art form and a way to make a statement.

Pickup truck accessories tailor trucks for any practical purpose you can devise for a truck. But much of what happens to pickups is pure fun. It is art in motion or maybe not even in motion. Maybe it's just art in sheet metal and it doesn't even move much. Let it continue. The truck modifying is all good clean fun.

Personalizing Your Pickup Truck

Personalizing Your Pickup Truck

Truck accessories became part of the aftermarket used to enhance the function or style of original OEM pickup trucks. These are often differentiated from other accessories or parts referred as "cores" or "hard parts" including water pumps, radiators and distributors. Examples of popular accessories built for light duty trucks are grille guards, toolboxes as well as nerf bars.

During the 1990s, truck accessories are not very popular since it changed the appearance or the style of the vehicle. Other major US manufacturers such as General Motors, Chrysler, American Motors and Ford Motors considered their duty trucks namely Chevrolet, Dodge, Jeep and Ford as working vehicles.

They did nothing to accommodate the need for appearance accessories. Instead they focused their specialty on enhancing the work done via accessorizing. Examples are spreaders as well as lift gates and snowplows.

On the other hand, market segments stretched out as producers offered variations of pickup truck sizes and types. With the advent of extended cabs, trucks began taking more of the urban appeal and purchased it for their style along with their utility. The new spectators of truck owners demanded more complex toolboxes complementing the appearance of their trucks.

Consequently, manufacturers accommodated the desires of their consumers. Products such as chrome fender trims, nerf bars, billet grilles as well as hood deflectors became widely available. Manufacturers also began to work together in designing their different truck models so as to easily put up the accessories using the bolt-on simplicity.

Chevy Truck Accessories - Spray on Or Not?

Chevy Truck Accessories - Spray on Or Not?

Chevy truck accessories make pickups personal. Not necessarily as some kind of personal statement. It may just be that you need certain things out of a truck.

Now you may have a new truck that you've spent $40,000 on and it may be tricked out in all kinds of ways. Personally, I can't afford such a truck. My threshold of pain is low enough, that I couldn't stand to drive a truck like that. The slightest little bit of damage would cause me grief and stress.

But, I'll bet my old truck is more unusual than yours. Probably would even get more attention. It is orange, for one thing. And it's a 1976 C-10, for another. And it's all original with 47,000 miles for another. You won't meet yourself on the highway with one of those very often.

But a pickup like this, though it isn't very stylish, has a certain appeal. You get that vintage look.

But it's still capable of doing lots of work.

Just for example, we are getting ready right now to haul a group of baby calves to our farm. Now this old truck will haul these calves just as well as a new truck would. All I needed for this project was a rubber bed mat to go under the truck cap that's already there.

That's the way it goes. Slowly add on accessories over time to get the job done. Slowly add on options to get the look you want. Over time your pickup becomes customized to fit what you want.

Chevy truck accessories turn pickups into what you need or want. Pick options to look or work just like you choose.

Truck Accessories - Grilles

Truck Accessories - Grilles

Truck accessories can turn an older pickup into a unique expression. Let's face it, it's easier and a lot cheaper to turn an old truck into a really unique vehicle. Easier, because there are likely fewer of your old truck model out there than a newer model.

One of the most popular styling changes for trucks is the grille change. Nothing you do to a truck exterior is noticed much quicker than a grille change.

For the truck owner, the choices of grilles are huge in number. There is much competition to make the best and best looking grilles. One catalog I looked at listed 15 different styles with thousands of individual grilles in stock.

Billet grilles is one of the trendy terms. The term refers tot he manufacture of the pieces. These are machined from a solid piece, a billet, of aluminum. It's 6061-T6, if that matters. The individual bars are machined, then hand welded into the design. This is the type of skill associated with the high-end hot rod shops. Now it's available to us common folks!

Now not all these custom look grilles come in aluminum. Some are stainless steel. Others are made of ABS, a plastic.

Then the finishes vary all over the place. It can be just polished or it can be painted. And the painting is tricky too. It's often just on the leading edge you see. Here's the other thing...

These grilles install different ways. The hot rod shop way is to cut part of your existing grille away and then fasten the new insert into place. That's the preferred method since your existing grille can't show through. It's gone.

The other easier way is to fasten the grille right over the existing piece. It's easier to do it that way. Some grille models let you choose which way you wan to do it. In either case, you're going to get the instructions to help you pull off the project.

Truck accessories may be for looks or performance. One of the most popular looks styling accessories is a custom look grille for your pickup. It's amazing the variety of looks that are out there.
